Can You Pour Concrete in Rain? What to Know
A concrete truck booked for the morning and rain forecast for the afternoon is a familiar situation on NSW sites. Can you pour concrete in rain? Sometimes, yes. But the right call depends on the amount of rain, the stage of the pour, the condition of the ground, and the type of concrete work being completed.
Light, brief rain does not always ruin a pour. Heavy or sustained rain, however, can damage the finished surface, weaken the top layer of concrete, wash out fresh edges, and turn a prepared site into mud. For driveways, house slabs, footings, paths and structural works, delaying a pour can be cheaper than rectifying poor concrete later.
Can You Pour Concrete in Rain?
Concrete can be placed in light rain when the site is properly prepared and the crew has a clear wet-weather plan. The key is preventing uncontrolled water from mixing into the fresh concrete or sitting on the surface while it is being finished.
Fresh concrete is designed with a specific water-to-cement ratio. Adding excess water, whether it comes from rainfall, puddles in the formwork, or an overly wet mix, can reduce surface strength and affect durability. Rain does not necessarily penetrate deeply into a placed slab, but it can create serious problems at the surface where wear, weather and vehicle traffic have the greatest effect.
The timing matters as much as the weather itself. Rain before concrete arrives may make the subgrade unstable or leave standing water in excavations. Rain during placement can disrupt screeding and finishing. Rain shortly after finishing can mark, erode or dilute the surface before it has gained enough set.
For small jobs, a short delay may be sensible. For larger booked pours, the decision should be made early with the concrete supplier, builder and site crew so trucks, labour and plant are not caught waiting on an unsuitable site.
How Rain Can Affect Concrete Work
The most common issue is a weak, dusty or patchy surface. When rainwater lands on fresh concrete, it can increase the water content at the top of the slab. Once cured, that upper layer may be more prone to dusting, scaling, flaking or premature wear.
Rain can also interfere with finishing. Concrete naturally releases bleed water as it settles. If rain is added before this moisture has been managed, the surface can become overly wet and difficult to finish correctly. Trowelling water back into the slab is not a fix. It can trap excess water near the surface and create a weaker finish.
On driveways and paths, rain may wash cement paste from exposed edges, spoil a broom finish, or leave pitting and uneven colour. For footings and piers, the bigger concern can be water pooling in the excavation or washing soil into the concrete. Contaminated footings and disturbed trench bottoms should be assessed before pouring continues.
Rain also affects the ground beneath the pour. A soaked base can rut under machinery, lose compaction, soften at the edges or allow formwork to move. Concrete placed over mud, loose material or waterlogged fill is not resting on the stable, prepared base the job requires.
Check the Site Before the Truck Arrives
A wet-weather pour begins with site preparation, not a tarp pulled out once rain starts. The area should be graded so surface water drains away from the work, with access kept firm enough for concrete trucks, pumps, excavators and labour to operate safely.
Formwork needs to be secure, clean and free of standing water. Reinforcement should be correctly positioned and supported, not sitting in mud or on saturated ground. For footings, strip out softened material or sediment that has entered the excavation after rain. The concrete should bear on a clean, sound base.
It is also worth checking the forecast by the hour, rather than relying on a general chance-of-rain figure. A brief shower may be manageable if covers and labour are ready. A forecast storm front, strong wind or several hours of steady rain is a different proposition, particularly on exposed sites around the Shoalhaven and Illawarra where conditions can change quickly.
Good access is part of the decision. If a truck cannot safely reach the pour location without bogging, or a pump cannot be set up on stable ground, postponing protects both the job and the people working on it.
When It Is Better to Postpone
There is no benefit in forcing a pour simply because the truck has been booked. Postponement is usually the practical option when any of these conditions apply:
Heavy rain is falling or likely to continue through placement and finishing.
Water is pooling in forms, footings, trenches or on the prepared base.
The subgrade has softened, become muddy or lost compaction.
Wind and rain make safe finishing, covering or site access difficult.
For structural concrete, engineered work or work with strict finish requirements, the threshold for delaying should be lower. A house slab, suspended element, retaining wall footing or heavily trafficked driveway has too much riding on the quality of the placement to take unnecessary chances.
Rain is not the only factor. Cool, wet weather can slow setting times, which means the crew may need to stay on site longer before finishing and protection can be completed. A surface that appears ready too early can be damaged by premature trowelling, foot traffic or covers laid directly onto it.
Protecting Concrete if Rain Arrives Mid-Pour
If rain begins during a manageable pour, the immediate goal is to keep extra water out of the concrete and off the finished surface. Covers should be ready before placement starts, not stored across the site. Plastic sheeting, temporary shelters and properly planned runoff control can protect small to medium sections while work continues.
Do not add dry cement, sand or other material to absorb rainwater on the slab. Do not work ponded water into the surface. These shortcuts can create a weak, inconsistent finish that may look acceptable on the day but fail under traffic and weather over time.
Where possible, place concrete in sections and maintain control of the leading edge. If rain becomes heavy, stop finishing activities and protect the surface without dragging sheeting across fresh concrete. Covers should be supported where practical so they do not imprint, stain or tear the surface.
The crew also needs to manage runoff. Water flowing from a higher part of the site, a roof line or an unprotected stockpile can carry soil onto fresh concrete. Diverting water before it reaches the pour is far more effective than trying to clean up contamination afterwards.
What to Do After Rain Falls on Fresh Concrete
Once rain eases, inspect the concrete before restarting finishing work. Remove pooled water carefully without disturbing the surface, then allow the slab to settle until the excess moisture has cleared. The surface should not be finished while it is shiny with water or soft from rainfall.
If rain has only touched concrete that was already sufficiently set and protected, the impact may be minor. If it has caused visible erosion, laitance, marks, exposed aggregate, washed edges or surface softness, the area may need further assessment. The repair approach depends on the depth and extent of the damage. Some issues are limited to the surface, while others can affect the quality of the whole placement.
Curing still matters after wet weather. Once the concrete can be protected without marking the finish, maintain suitable curing conditions so it gains strength evenly. Avoid loading a new driveway, slab or path too early just because the rain has stopped.
A reliable concrete result comes from making the weather call early, preparing the site properly and having the labour, plant and protection ready to respond. When conditions are doubtful, a short delay is often the decision that protects the job for years to come.
