Concrete Curing Time Guide for NSW Projects

A fresh concrete driveway can look ready by the next morning, but appearance is not strength. This concrete curing time guide explains when a slab can be walked on, worked around and loaded, so residential, rural and civil projects are not put at risk by moving too soon.

Concrete gains strength through hydration - a chemical reaction between cement and water. That process needs time, suitable moisture and manageable temperatures. A surface that has hardened enough to leave a footprint-free finish may still be well short of the strength needed for vehicles, machinery, walls or building loads.

What concrete curing actually means

Curing is the controlled period after placing concrete when it is kept moist and protected so the mix can develop its intended strength and durability. It is different from drying. In fact, concrete can cure well while retaining moisture, whereas drying too quickly can reduce surface quality and increase cracking.

The 28-day mark is the standard reference point because many concrete mixes are specified and tested at 28 days. That does not mean nothing can happen before then. Concrete develops strength progressively, often gaining a significant proportion in its first week, but the actual rate depends on the mix design, cement type, added materials, temperature, moisture, slab thickness and site conditions.

For a house pad, retaining wall footing, driveway or equipment slab, the design specification always comes first. Where structural elements are involved, follow the engineer's details and the concrete supplier's recommendations rather than relying on a general timeframe.

Concrete curing time guide: practical site timeframes

On a properly placed and cured standard concrete mix in favourable conditions, light foot traffic is commonly possible after 24 to 48 hours. This is enough for careful access, not for dragging ladders, placing heavy materials or allowing trades to treat the surface as a work platform.

After around seven days, concrete has often achieved roughly 65 to 75 per cent of its 28-day design strength. Many residential slabs can handle normal light use at this stage, provided the slab design and concrete specification support it. A driveway may be ready for passenger vehicles after about seven days, but this is not a blanket approval. Thin sections, decorative finishes, hot weather placement and poor curing can all change the outcome.

At 28 days, concrete is generally regarded as having reached its nominated design strength. This is the safer planning point for full service loading, including heavier vehicles and machinery, unless a project-specific engineer or supplier confirms an earlier loading schedule.

Footings, structural slabs and retaining wall bases need particular care. The issue is not only the strength of the concrete itself. Backfilling too early can damage green concrete, disturb forms or introduce loads before the full structure is ready to resist them. Walls also need appropriate drainage, reinforcement and compaction behind them, not just adequate curing time.

Timing by project type

A small path or garden edging job may only need protection from feet, pets and watering equipment during its first couple of days. A driveway, shed slab or house slab has more to lose. Tyres can mark young concrete, sharp turns can scuff the surface, and loaded utes or delivery trucks can overstress edges and thinner areas.

For driveways, keep passenger vehicles off for at least seven days unless the contractor advises otherwise. Avoid heavy vehicles, concrete pumps, skip bins, excavators and loaded trucks until the slab has reached the required strength. The edges of a driveway are especially vulnerable when a vehicle crosses onto unconfined ground beside the pavement.

For a house slab, the programme should allow for curing before framing loads, stored materials and site traffic build up. Formwork removal is also not simply a calendar decision. Vertical forms may be stripped earlier than supports beneath suspended work, but the required timing depends on the structural design, span, concrete strength and construction sequence.

Rural and civil work can add another level of loading. Stock crossings, machinery hardstands, wash-down areas and access pavements may be exposed to tractors, trailers and plant that far exceed the weight of a family vehicle. The concrete thickness, reinforcement, subgrade preparation and joint layout need to be designed for that use from the start. Waiting longer cannot correct a slab that was under-designed or placed on poorly prepared ground.

Weather can change the schedule

NSW conditions can move quickly from a hot, dry afternoon to heavy rain or a cold overnight change. Both can affect curing and finishing decisions.

Hot weather speeds up setting at the surface and increases evaporation. If moisture leaves the slab too quickly, plastic shrinkage cracking and dusting can follow. Wind can be just as damaging as high temperatures, particularly on broad exposed slabs. In these conditions, curing should begin as soon as finishing allows, with methods such as curing compound, wet coverings or plastic sheeting used correctly for the job.

Cold weather slows strength gain. Concrete may still cure, but it takes longer to reach the strength required for loading or formwork removal. Fresh concrete must also be protected from very low temperatures, as early freezing can cause permanent damage.

Rain is not automatically a disaster, but rain on fresh concrete can weaken or mark the surface if it is worked into the mix. A competent crew will assess the forecast, site drainage, access and protection options before a pour. Rescheduling is sometimes the better decision, particularly where the finish or structural outcome cannot be compromised.

Why the first seven days matter

The first week is the critical curing period for most normal concrete work. Keeping the slab from drying too fast gives cement particles more opportunity to hydrate, improving strength and surface durability. The practical aim is to maintain moisture and avoid unnecessary damage while the concrete is young.

Curing compound is a common option because it forms a membrane that slows water loss. It is efficient for larger areas, but it must suit any later coating, adhesive or finish. For example, some products can interfere with the bond of tiles, membranes or toppings unless they are removed or a compatible system is selected.

Wet hessian or curing blankets can work well when kept consistently damp, while plastic sheeting helps retain moisture when placed carefully. Poorly placed plastic can leave uneven colour or surface marks on decorative work, so the curing method should match the required finish. For exposed aggregate, coloured concrete or architectural surfaces, early planning matters as much as the pour itself.

Avoid these common mistakes

The most common error is treating concrete as finished once it feels hard underfoot. It is not ready for every task just because it is no longer wet. Keep trades, vehicles and stored materials off until the agreed timeframe has passed.

Another mistake is adding water to concrete at the surface to make finishing easier. Extra water can weaken the top layer and contribute to dusting, scaling and reduced wear resistance. The same applies to finishing during bleed water or rain. Patience during placement prevents problems that are expensive to repair later.

Saw-cut joints are also time-sensitive. Control joints are cut to encourage cracking along planned lines rather than randomly across the slab. Cutting too late can allow uncontrolled cracks to form; cutting too early can damage the edges. The right window depends on the concrete, weather and cutting equipment, so it should be managed by the concreting team rather than guessed.

Finally, do not remove curing protection just because the forecast looks good. Bright sun and dry wind can be exactly when a young slab needs protection most.

Plan curing into the wider project

Good curing does not hold a project up. It protects the work already completed and gives the programme a realistic basis. Before concrete is poured, confirm when access is needed, what loads will cross the slab, whether follow-on trades need the area, and where machinery will operate. That allows the pour sequence, joints, protection and access routes to be organised properly.
